Common greetings that Americans use to start a conversation
Let’s imagine this scenario: If you are waiting at a bus station and you see a foreigner standing right next to you, and you want to start a conversation, what do you say?
For my own preference, I’d to start a conversation by asking some basic questions or greeting phrases to let the other parties know you’d like to talk. Below are three common greetings you can use to begin a conversation:
1. How are you doing? 你好吗? One of the most common phrases that Americans use when they start a conversation is, “Hey! How are you doing?” or “How are you?” or “How’s it going?” In my opinion, learning how to properly greet others is the first step toward building a good relationship.
2. What´s up? 什麼事?/近来可好? “What’s up” is another very common greeting phrase you will hear by Americans. “What’s up” means what’s happening or what’s new in your life; or it just simply means “hey or hi”. You usually will receive two common responses after you say “What’s up?” to others, here are the two examples: (1) Person A: What’s up? Person B: Nothing much, you? In this example, “What’s up” here means what’s happening or what’s going on in your life. (2) Person A: What’s up? Person B: What’s up? (or Sup) In this example, “What’s up” here is similar to “Hi/Hello”.
3. What´s going on? 最近怎么样?/最近还好吗?/发生什么事了? “What’s going on” is yet another common greeting used by American people. “What’s going on” means what is happening. This similar to “what’s up” above. For example, if you use what’s going on to greet others, then you are asking others what’s happening/what’s new in their lives.
Other than greeting, you can also use “what’s going on” to express that you don’t know what’s happening with something. For example, if you need to use your laptop but for some reasons it just can’t be turned on. Here you can say, “Hey, what’s going on with my laptop?” Another example, if your roommate ask you “Why is our refrigerator broken?” If you don’t know the reason why, then you can respond, “I don’t know what’s going on with it.”
